I wouldn't recommend formatting and reinstalling your OS on a regular basis unless you have your files backed up, you are willing to reinstall all your programs, and reapply settings.

Anyway, since you're going to be installing Windows 7, you shouldn't need a Vista Recovery disc but rather a Windows 7 recovery disc, unless you are planning on reinstalling Vista and not Windows 7. I'm pretty sure that you can use the Windows 7 DVD that you will be receiving to reinstall your OS. If it's only a upgrade DVD, you can still reinstall your OS, but you will have to put the DVD in after you boot into Windows 7. Make sure you have access to your product key.

The "free upgrade" disc they send you may or may not require a prior Windows installation present.

The normal upgrade discs sold in the store require a prior install to go in correctly, but some of the "free upgrade" things they're sending out don't, and I believe they're simply sending normal OEM versions.

Just in case, since you have the prior legitimate OS, you could use the following tutorial. You shouldn't need a Vista recovery disc if you don't already have one.
