Until what extent can a data recovery software recover files?

I just downloaded Data Doctor Recovery and it’s trying to recover pictures i’ve deleted long ago. will it work?

    The relevant files have been overwritten.

    For temporary system files you remove the files you save normally within 20 minutes most of them are overwritten after an hour there is probably nothing left to read at all.
